The Helmholtz Forum Earth and Environment has submitted an official contribution to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on behalf of the Helmholtz Research Field Earth and Environment. The CBD Secretariat records research activities, measures, and progress within the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework on a central digital platform. On this platform, governmental and non-governmental actors can showcase their contributions to biodiversity conservation and document them internationally. The published contributions promote exchange, pool knowledge, and strengthen cooperation between international actors. The information submitted will be included in the global progress report, which will play a central role at the 2026 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP 17) in Yerevan.

Helmholtz operates comprehensive monitoring infrastructures that enable long-term observations of terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems. Particularly in the field of marine and polar biodiversity, the structure, function, and adaptability of biotic communities are being investigated, as are biogeochemical cycles and the consequences of human influences. In addition, Helmholtz develops innovative methods for recording environmental stressors in order to precisely document changes in biodiversity and their causes.

Through this research, Helmholtz contributes to systematically recording changes in biological diversity, understanding their relationships with ecosystem functions, and providing scientifically sound options for action for the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity.
